thursday, june 16th

Jacques gathered his papers from the dining table and packed them into his bag. Taking a last slurp of coffee as he moved across to the kitchen, he dumped his cup on the draining board.

“Beth, I’m going,” he shouted as he slipped his arms into his jacket. He patted his pocket and pulled out the small gift he had kept in his desk drawer for over two weeks and placed it in the centre of the table. The pale blue bow looked a little crumpled. He straightened it as best he could.

“Coming,” she shouted from the bedroom at the other side of the apartment. A few seconds later, Beth ran into the living space, her shoulder-length hair neatly combed, her dress not quite properly fastened at the back, attempting to put her shoes on and walk at the same time.

“Zip me up, will you?” She spun around, one shoe on, the other in her left hand.

“There’s no need to rush. I’m walking to the office this morning,” he said, gently planting a kiss on her neck. “You’ve planned thoroughly for today, and everything will go well. I know it.”

“I hope so. And you’ll be there at three?”

“I wouldn’t miss it.” Collecting his bag he moved to the door. “I’ve got to go – and there’s a surprise for you on the table,” he said as he disappeared into the vestibule. Not quite closing the door completely, he waited. The muffled shriek of delight as Beth opened her gift was the only reward he required. Quietly letting himself out of the front door, he ran down the four flights of stairs, a contented smile on his face.
